MSOE, which is the main entry class for the Society, is open to application from all those working in operations engineering, with either the required qualifications or experience. It is also open to select non-engineers who work at a senior level that have responsibility for, and deep understanding of, an engineering function. 

MSOE comes with a whole host of benefits and privileges, including voting rights for the annual SOE elections and the ability to apply for Engineering Council, and Society for the Environment registrations. Members at this level will also be eligible to stand for elections themselves to SOE's Trustee Board or the relevant Professional Sector Council. Most importantly, MSOE is proof to employers and others that you are working at the required standard of a Professional Engineer. 

All applications for MSOE are judged against the membership criteria set by SOE's Membership and Professional Standards Committee, and must show that you have sufficient skills and experience. There are generally two routes to entry:

Qualification route

You will need to evidence a qualification equivalent or higher to a Level 3 on the UK Qualification Framework in a relevant engineering subject. You will also need to show at least four years of work experience, evidenced on a CV. 

Industry Professional route

If you do not have a Level 3 qualification, you will be considered for membership if you have 'on the job' experience. This must take the form of a CV and show at least eight years of relevant work experience, with at least four years of these in a senior or leadership role. 

Our annual fee for MSOE is currently £126, which is pro-rated depending on when you join during the year, and then renews every January. There is also a one off application fee, which is non refundable, of £32. This fee increases for offline applications.

If you are employed by one of our Corporate Partners, and they have agreed to pay for your membership and application fee, then the process will pick up on this when you tell us who you work for.

Fellow class of membership is the highest that can be applied for, and is granted by the Membership & Professional Standards committee to those that have influenced engineering policy, made a vast contribution to safe, environmentally sustainable operations engineering, or have specialist technical knowledge which they have shared with others and used for the benefit of the public.

Members applying for FSOE can vote and stand in SOE's Trustee Board and PSC elections as with MSOE. FSOE carries with it considerable prestige and responsibility, and marks you out as a senior leader in the field of operations engineering

FSOE requires a high standard; for direct entry, you must satisfy member class entry requirements in the first instance. Additionally, you will need to evidence how you meet the Qualities of Fellowship, which is the assessment criteria used by the Membership and Professional Standards Committee to grade entrants.

If you are an existing member and wish to gain FSOE, you must be already hold membership at MSOE, and will need to evidence Qualities of Fellowship in the same way and also provide us with an updated work history since your election to MSOE. 

Our annual fee for FSOE is currently £152, which is pro-rated depending on when you join during the year, and then renews every January. There is also a one off application fee, which is non refundable, of £165.

SOE is committed to ensuring that the next generation of operations engineers get off on the right track; we offer free membership for any students on full time college or university courses.  

Student members get electronic subscriptions to SOE's magazines, access to our library of articles which help with practical engineering knowledge, CPD events, and a dedicated content stream to help with career advice when starting out. 

To qualify for Student Membership, you must be on a full-time college or university course. You must also be studying an engineering subject. You must also agree to abide by SOE's Code of Conduct.

We do not charge any fees for Student Membership - application and entry is totally free, as long as you meet the criteria. You will also qualify for special discounted rates after your course finishes, to help with the transition towards gaining your full membership and MSOE letters. 

SOE is committed to ensuring that the next generation of operations engineers get off on the right track; we offer free membership for anyone who is on an approved apprenticeship scheme. 

Apprentice members get electronic subscriptions to SOE's magazines, access to our library of articles which help with practical engineering knowledge, CPD events, and a dedicated content stream to help with career advice when starting out. 

To qualify for Apprentice Membership, you must be on a recognised, engineering based apprenticeship scheme through a training provider, employer or college. You must also agree to abide by SOE's Code of Conduct.

We do not charge any fees for Apprentice Membership - application and entry is totally free, as long as you meet the criteria. You will also qualify for special discounted rates after your course finishes, to help with the transition towards gaining your full membership and MSOE letters. 

As part of our commitment to newly qualified engineers, tackling the skills gap and ensuring access to the next generation of members, we offer a special class for recent qualifiers, giving you full MSOE benefits at a reduced rate, which gives you time to gain the required experience to move to full Member Class.

The entry requirements are the same as MSOE for the most part. You need to have a recognised Level 3 course or apprenticeship, or a HNC, HND or degree qualification. However members for this level are exempted the work experience requirements, and must have completed their course within the last three years. You must also agree to abide by SOE's Code of Conduct.

This class of membership starts you off at 25% of the full membership fee, and goes up in increments of 25% per year, until you reach full rate. There is no application fee for this class.

SOE's Associate class of membership fulfils SOE's aim of making Engineering knowledge available to all. Associate member is suitable for those who are involved in, and work around engineering but are not themselves qualified or working as an engineer. This includes journalists, technical sales and marketing professionals, operational managers etc. 

AMSOE is also a stepping stone to MSOE for those who do not yet have the required skills or qualifications, but are working towards them. Associate membership will give you access to SOE's CPD events, technical magazines and knowledge library, and all other member benefits apart from voting and election privileges.

We invite applications from all with a personal or professional interest in the world of operations engineering. There are no formal entry requirements, however applicants must read and accept the SOE Code of Conduct for members and abide by them.
